On May 30, 2018, the Hong Kong and Macau Chapter celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Cornell Hotel Society with a reception and tour of Hong Kong’s newest hotel – The Murray. With an interesting background to the building and its historical preservation, The Murray is a re-purposed commercial building transformed into a boutique 5-star hotel destination in the heart of Central. The project was completed by Foster + Partners.

CHS Foundation / Treadwell International Experience Prize

Jay Treadwell ’61 has been a long-time champion of international study for student at The Hotel School.  In 2018, Jay partnered with the Cornell Hotel Society Foundation to establish the CHS Foundation/Treadwell International Experience Prize.  The $25,000 in prize funds is awarded to students who express an interest in studying abroad.  The prize helps fund travel, housing and language classes for the students while studying, or volunteering, outside the United States.

CHS Honors Icon and Innovator Award Winners

The Tenth annual Cornell Hospitality Icon and Innovator Awards banquet was held on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at The Pierre Hotel in New York City. This year’s Icon Award winner was Arne Sorenson, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Marriott International.  Hotelie Tim Hentschel ’01, Co-Founder and CEO of Hotel Planner, was honored with the Innovator Award.

The Executive Board of CHS presented each award winner with a plate signifying their conferment as an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Cornell Hotel Society.

Collegiate Chapter Celebrates CHS at 90 Where It All Started

On May 12, 2018, the Collegiate Chapter of the Cornell Hotel Society celebrated the 90th anniversary at CHS at the location of the association’s first meeting – the Memorial Room in Willard Straight Hall. In addition to the live jazz band and CHS/SHA trivia, Raj Chandnani ‘95 and Dean Walsh addressed the students, staff and faculty members that were present.

The event also served as the chapter’s annual Senior Send-Off. The Senior Send-Off is a celebration of the graduating class that brings its students together for superlatives and reminiscing, while also highlighting the benefit of staying involved with the Cornell Hotel Society after graduation.

Nevada Chapter Celebrates CHS at 90

On May 12 the Nevada chapter celebrated the 90th anniversary of CHS at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas. The Hotelies in attendance enjoyed passed appetizers and open bar at the beautiful Skyfall lounge.  After cocktails, several Hotelies attended a delicious three-course menu full of flavor and surprises at Fleur by Hubert Keller.  Special thanks to MGM Resorts for sponsoring the event.

On May 9 the Central Florida Chapter celebrated CHS at 90. The event was held at the Capital Grille in Orlando, FL, where the CHS chapter had use of the Wine Room. Guests were treated to complimentary hor d’oeuvres, which included Wagyu Beef crostini, crab cakes, and lamb chops. The event was a mix of both younger and older classes, and one of the best elements of the event was how well all of the classes mixed and interacted with one another. There was a true sense of excitement and energy within the group, and once all guests were in attendance, chapter President Mike McLaughlin ‘13 made a short speech and toast to CHS’s 90th anniversary. The chef treated us to warm chocolate chip cookies to close the night, which was a great way to end the evening.

CHS Singapore Celebrates CHS at 90

On May 12, the Singapore chapter celebrated the 90th anniversary of CHS at the Coriander Leaf Grill & Screening Room where 20 alumni and their families enjoyed an Asian-fusion lunch buffet in a traditional picturesque Singapore shop house on Ang Siang Road, a quiet enclave of shops and restaurants within walking distance from the city’s bustling CBD. Following lunch, alumni enjoyed a game of trivia, consisting of questions related to CHS, Singapore and the hotel industry followed by a lucky draw for the grand prize – a three-night stay at the newly opened Fairmont Sirru Fen Fushi in the Maldives.

CHS Washington DC / Baltimore Celebrates CHS at 90

On May 12, 2018, the Cornell Hotel Society of Washington DC/Baltimore gathered with 40 members to celebrate the 90th anniversary of CHS. The event was held at the newly opened Canopy Hotel in North Bethesda thanks to Dave Pollin ’90 of Buccini Pollin Group and Joseph Bojanowski (husband of Pia Bojanowski MMH ’96) of PM Hotel Group. Bill Eaton ’61 was the guest speaker at the event and told the group what it meant for him to be a Hotelie for Life® and how the school has played a prominent role in his career and family. Bill and Phillis hosted a Hotelie picnic at their house which evolved into the Cornell Mid-Atlantic picnic and then the “Cornell Mid-Atlantic Crab Feast” for the past 40+ years. Bill told the group that one of the best investments he ever made was paying lifetime dues to the Cornell Society of Hotelmen as a recent grad and later in life that serving as a Cornell Trustee was one of his greatest honors. His comments were followed by a competition of CHS trivia and a tour of the hotel.

CHS Japan Celebrates CHS At 90

The Japan Chapter celebrated the 90th anniversary of CHS at a brand new Indian restaurant operated by a Cornellian. The event was held on May 9, which was a bit earlier than the actual birthday, but 46 Hotelies and their families joined and enjoyed delicious Indian food. We also enjoyed seeing the video in which alumni representing each region around the world appeared!

Jeanne Sander ’66 and her husband were in Sydney and reached out to the local chapter president, Dave Kennedy ’95. They joined the chapter to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of CHS at the Cabbage Tree Club in Palm Beach, north of Sydney. As Jeanne put it, “Steaks on the Barbie – is there a better way to celebrate in Australia?”
