AA&EE Annual Chapter Meeting

RECAP: Salzburg, Austria | November 8-10, 2019

Last weekend about 24 CHS members came together in the beautiful Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron to reconnect, learn, network, and enjoy each other’s company. Our members traveled from all over Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Ukraine, and even London to join us.

Friday evening we convened in the Grand Hall with a roaring fire and raised a glass to the start of another great annual meeting. Daniel Szelényi, GMP ’16 and General Manager of Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron, then led us upstairs to the stunning Venetian Room where we sat fora delicious four-course dinner. Finally we moved again to the Library, once the private library of Max Reinhardt who had owned the palace as his private residence, for after-dinner drinks and further conversation.

On Saturday the day began at 9.30am after breakfast with a great program dedicated to the Salzburg/Austrian hotel markets and digital marketing strategies. First Christian Walter, PDP ’08 and Managing Director at PKF Hotelexperts, gave an overview of the hotel market together with commentary by Daniel Szeleényi and Peter Lorenz, General Manager of the Grand Sheraton Salzburg, who joined us for the day.

Our keynote speaker, Alex Schuster, Head of Digital at 25Hours Hotels, gave an interactive and insightful presentation on what the brand is doing to capture the attention of guests online – often by going offline! After his presentation Marcello Cicalò, GMP ’17 and Corporate Director of Sales and Marketing at the Italian Hospitality Collection, joined the stage and we discussed approaches brands can take to craft effective and successful digital marketing strategies.

The conversation took us into lunch and then the members meeting followed, where we discussed several items of news for the chapter:

  • The official opening of our Italian non-profit association Amici e Sostenitori della Cornell Hotel School, a legal entity whose scope is to support our chapter’s activities and events. At last year’s meeting, this was just an idea – to present the founding members and the official registration was a true pleasure!

*If you would like to view a copy of the Constitution and Charter (both in Italian) please feel free to reply to this email, and we’ll be happy to send it along.

  • Early Registration for Roma 2020 is Open! Next April 2-5 our chapter is hosting the EMEA Regional Meeting in Rome, and we used the occasion of our annual meeting together to officially announce the news that registration is open and the website is up!
  • Our newest member Natalie Gurieva from Kyiv presented and won an impressive bid to host next year’s chapter meeting in Kyiv, Ukraine! Save the date: September 25-27, 2020!

That evening we met for dinner at suite 403 of the Hotel Sacher Salzburg where Hani El Sharkawi, PDP ’13 and Director at the Sacher School of Excellence, took us on a “Sacher Safari” combining a hotel tour with a dining experience.

During the dessert course in the Sacher Cafè, Christian held the second annual impromptu auction to raise funds for the chapter and EMEA/MMH scholarships. Through the generosity of our members we raised €4.050 from several hotel stays and experiences. Thank you to all who participated!

Naturally at the end of the evening the group wound up at the lobby bar at the Hotel Sacher where conversations and connecting continued, closing in on another fun, fruitful and successful CHS, AA&EE annual chapter meeting.
