Paris Lodging Outlook 2019

On Thursday, October 4, 2018, the CHS France chapter held their second annual Paris Lodging Outlook seminar at the Westin Paris – Vendome. The event featured six local experts that shared their outlook for the Paris hotel market in 2019.

Presentations were provided by:

Atlanta Lodging Outlook 2019

On Tuesday, September 4, 2018 the Georgia Chapter of the Cornell Hotel Society held its annual Atlanta Lodging Outlook breakfast seminar. A crowd of 320 area hotel industry professionals attended the 20th annual seminar. This year’s event was held at the InterContinental Hotel in Buckhead. Our host was Brian Ettelman ’87, Director of Catering.

CHS Georgia chapter President Drew Wallace ‘12 opened the proceedings, followed by Chip Rogers, President and CEO of the Asian American Hotel and Lodging Association, and Jim Sprouse, President of the Georgia Hotel & Lodging Association.

The first panel of speakers discussed economic development activity around the metropolitan area. The panelists included Nick Masino with Partnership Gwinnett, Jennifer Ball with Central Atlanta Progress, and Shannon W. James Sr. with Aerotropolis Atlanta Alliance, Inc.

Following the economic development discussion, a panel of local area experts presented their outlook for 2019:

  • Roger Tutterow Ph.D., Professor of Economics at Kennesaw State University
  • Mark Vaughan, EVP and Chief Sales Officer for the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau
  • Mark Woodworth ’77, Senior Managing Director of CBRE Hotels’ Americas Research

Thanks to eCornell who donated a certificate for $3,600 worth of online courses. The certificate was auctioned off, and the proceeds were used to support the Georgia chapter’s scholarship fund.

Jeanne Sander ‘66 Wins Alumni Service Award

Congratulations to Jeanne Sander ‘66 for being awarded the Frank H.T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Award, presented on September 21, 2018 at the Statler Hotel. As a Hotelie, Cornell parent, and lifelong volunteer, Jeanne has devoted years of service to the Hotel School and university. Jeanne served on the CHS executive board for several years before becoming president. She is a life member of the Cornell University Council and has served on the Hotel School’s graduate student advisory board and alumni advisory board. “Jeanne is an unsung hero for Cornell University, who is more interested in doing than receiving praise. She is always there to support the university’s priorities.” – Robert Mandelbaum ‘81.

Dubai Lodging Outlook 2019

On September 23, 2018, Cornell Hotel Society, MENA Chapter, along with STR Global hosted the 4th Annual Dubai Lodging Outlook 2019 Seminar at Fairmont The Palm, Dubai. Tarek M. Daouk ’01 kicked off the event with some general remarks on high level trends in the market and welcomed the remarkable line up of speakers. The morning seminar started off with a macroeconomic overview and forecast presentation by Mohamed Abu Basha, Director, Head of Macroeconomic Analysis, at EFG Hermes, a prominent investment bank in the region. Abu Basha’s presentation was followed by a presentation by Sarah Duignan, Director of Client Relationships at STR. Sarah highlighted the region’s key lodging trends in addition to STR’s forecast of key metrics for Dubai. The seminar was concluded with a panel discussion titled “The Impact of Mega Events on Lodging Markets”, which was moderated by Rupprecht Queitsch, CEO, INHOCO. The panelists included: Gillian Hamburger, SVP Commercial, Expo 2020 Dubai; Ali Manzoor, Associate Partner, Hospitality & Leisure Development Consultancy, Knight Frank Middle East; Saahil Lalit, Senior Director, Development, Middle East & Africa, Marriott International; Aditya Rajaram MMH ’11, Owner and Developer, Aloft Dubai South; and, Philip Wooller, Area Director Middle East & Africa, STR. Attendance at the event increased by 87% y-o-y, totaling 280 attendees. Chapter co-President, Aditya Rajaram MMH ’11 led the planning the of the event, supported by co-President Tarek M. Daouk ’01 and a team at STR. The event was sponsored by Fairmont The Palm and PSAV.

CHS New York Learns From Entrepreneur Panel

On May 10th, the CHS New City York Chapter celebrated its 90th anniversary for a networking and intimate panel discussion focused on entrepreneurship. Successful entrepreneurs shared their stories with a focus on the process of forming a new company. They gave advice on how to navigate through the challenges and of course, spoke about the valuable rewards of being an entrepreneur. We were joined by multiple members of the Cornell community and were able to connect on the world of entrepreneurship.

On Thursday, August 16, 2018, CHS hosted a reception for sixty Cornellians at the 21C Museum Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.
