APAC Regional Meeting 2016 – Jeju Island, S. Korea

The 22nd Annual CHS Pacific Regional Conference was held at Jeju, an island off the coast of South Korea, during the third week of May, 2016.

Under the leadership of Leo Moon ’04, CHS Korea Chapter President, the CHS Korea Chapter did a remarkable job organizing this four-day event. The Chapter board members, along with dedicated volunteers from Aiu Hotels and Resorts, prepared many exciting activities. These included offering exceptional local cuisine and visiting some of the most sought-after museums in Korea, such as the Osulloc Tea Museum and the Play K-Pop simulation museum, as well as a spectacular fireworks show. The event was able to raise a record-breaking US $65,000 for the CHS Asia Pacific Scholarship Fund.

Special thanks to Aiu Hotels and Hyatt Regency Jeju for hosting this year’s event where everyone enjoyed much Korea-style fun.

EMEA Regional Meeting — Reykjavik, Iceland

February 25th – 28th, 2016

Four days in Reykjavik among Hotelies turned into a spectacular weekend filled with adventure, history, and a look to the future of the industry. Organized by Alumni Deiv Salutskij ’77 and Martti Palonpera ’77, MPS ’94 — the event had approximately 100 attendees from all over the world, who participated in a Viking Dinner, soaked in the exquisite geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, and went on a day trip to the geysers in Thingvellir National Park.

The Cornell Hospitality Summit on Friday morning delivered updates on the College of Business, an informative presentation on the growing trend of tourism with the participation of the Minister of Trade and Tourism, the SVP Business Development for Iceland Air Group and Michael Widmann, PDP ‘00, Managing Partner PKF, and an insightful presentation on the sustainability in hotel operations by lecturer Jeanne Varney.

Thousands were raised for scholarships at the auction and our organizer Deiv was surprised with a special thanks for all his years of service and the naming of the scholarship in his honor. Congratulations also to outgoing Regional VPs Christian Walter PDP ‘08 and Alison Hargreaves ’00.

While perhaps the taste of dried mako shark will be easy to forget, the rest of the weekend will not be — thank you to all who attended for such a successful long weekend!

Save the date for the 2017 EMEA Meeting in London June 15-18th, under the new leadership of RVPs Jeffrey Scott ’91 and Michael Cortelletti MMH ’99.

Alumni from around the world attended the CHS annual meeting during the 2014 International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show in New York City last November.

Held at the New York Hilton Midtown, attendees enjoyed a continental breakfast, a State of the School address from Dean Michael Johnson, and an alumni panel of food and beverage entrepreneurs facilitated by Professor Ben Lawrence ’97. Guest panelists included Peter Karpinski ‘99, Co-Founder, Sage Restaurant Group; Jon Meadow ’02, Founder, LDV Hospitality; Sabato Sagaria ’97, Chief Restaurant Officer, Union Square Hospitality Group; and, Susan Sarich ’91, Founder, SusieCakes.

Each alumnus exemplified different perspectives of the industry and the challenges they have faced throughout their career. One of themes that emerged was to not be afraid of, and to learn from failure. The panelists further acknowledged their respective successes on the educational foundation they garnered from the School of Adminstration, which provided them the confidence to pursue their passions; and the strength of the alumni network, which supported them in unexpected ways.
