Scholarships and Awards
Here is a current list of Scholarships funded by Cornell Hotel Society Chapters and Regions.
Unless otherwise indicated, all scholarships are administered by the University.
Established June 7, 1996 by the Cornell Hotel Society.
Five scholarships paying out a total of $94,000-$95,000 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $3,000,000.
Established January 30, 2003 by CHS Global
One scholarship paying $17,000-18,000 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $560,000. This scholarship for a student studying Food & Beverage Management at the School of Hotel Administration.
In 2017, the Cornell Hotel Society and the Cornell Hotel Society Foundation jointly assumed the sponsorship of the former Joseph Drown Special Prize previously supported by The Joseph Drown Foundation that was established in 1953. On November 8, 2019, this prize was renamed in memory of Hotelie alum, Phil Miller.
In its current form, this special prize is awarded to graduating seniors in the School of Hotel Administration. One senior recipient will be selected to receive a $10,000 cash prize and will address that year’s graduating class at the Hotel School Commencement ceremony in May. Semi-finalists will also receive a monetary award. All finalists are also awarded a Lifetime Membership in the Cornell Hotel Society and are asked to serve as ambassadors for CHS as they pursue their respective careers. Learn more about this prize.
Established November 8, 2019 by the CHS Global
This endowment is designed to recognize and celebrate Phil’s legacy as a builder of networks and relationships. The purpose is to provide one or more Hotel School students, typically in their junior year, an opportunity to attend one of the several major CHS events held around the world. The grant is intended to offset the costs of travel, lodging and event registration so that recipients can fully engage with alumni and other attendees. Learn more about this prize.

One scholarship paying approximately $3500 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $115,000.
Established April 18, 1997 by the CHS Rocky Mountain Chapter.
One scholarship paying approximately $4300 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $130,000. First preference is given to students from Colorado.
Established July, 24, 2009 by the CHS Central America Chapter.
One scholarship paying approximately $1300 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $40,000. Income from this fund provides undergraduate scholarship support for students from Central America enrolled in the School of Hotel Administration.
Established October 11, 2004 by the CHS Mid-Atlantic Region Chapter.
One scholarship paying approximately $2400 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $75,000. First preference is given to students from the Mid-Atlantic region.
Established June 1, 2008 by the CHS Washington DC/Baltimore Chapter.
One scholarship paying approximately $5500 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $170,000.
Established September 11, 1992 by the CHS Toronto Chapter.
One scholarship paying approximately $1200 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $38,000. Income from this fund provides undergraduate scholarship support for Canadian students enrolled in the School of Hotel Administration.
Established April 5, 2001 by the CHS New England Chapter.
One scholarship paying approximately $4500 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $143,000. First preference is given to students from the New England area.
Established November 15, 1994 by the Cornell Hotel Society New York Chapter. In 2014, the Cornell Hotel Society New York Chapter Scholarships, as well as the Cornell Hotel Society New York City Chapter Scholarship (established in 1999), were combined into one Cornell Hotel Society New York Chapter Scholarship.
One scholarship paying approximately $11,000 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $364,000. First preference is given to students from the New York City area.
Established November 19, 1994 by the Cornell Hotel Society Northern California Chapter.
One scholarship paying approximately $3700 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $114,000. First preference is given to students from the Northern California area.
Established May 14, 2000 by the CHS Central Florida Chapter. In 2015, the Cornell Hotel Society Southern Florida Scholarship (established in 2009) was deactivated and the funds were moved into the Cornell Hotel Society Florida Scholarship.
One scholarship paying approximately $5300 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $164,000. Income from this fund will provide scholarship support for undergraduate students enrolled in the School of Hotel Administration who are from the State of Florida.
Established January 1, 1992 by the CHS Georgia Chapter.
One scholarship paying approximately $7000 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $220,000.
Established by the Southwest Regional Chapters.
One scholarship paying approximately $3000 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $95,000.
Established December 2, 2004 by the CHS Arizona Chapter.
One scholarship paying approximately $3700 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $115,000. First preference is given to students who are wishing to further their careers in the spa industry.
Established February 6, 2004 by the CHS Asia Pacific Region.
One scholarship paying $27,000-30,000 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $850,000. First preference will be given to students from the Asia Pacific region.
Established May 14, 2012 by Stanley Tao-Hung Sun ’00.
One scholarship paying approximately $6500 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $205,000. First preference will be given to students from Hong Kong or Macau. Second preference will be given to students from the greater China region.
Established February 21, 1985 by the CHS European Region.
One scholarship paying over $12,000 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $400,000. First preference is given to European students.
Regional scholarship fund for the Professional Development Program (PDP) course work on the Cornell campus. The US$7000 contribution covers course fees for two PDP courses over one week in June and a small stipend to help cover hotel, meals or transportation. This scholarship is administered by the region.

Established April 29, 1999 by the CHS European Region.
One scholarship paying approximately $8,000 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $248,000.
Established June 13, 2002 by the CHS European Region.
Two scholarships paying approximately $24,000 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $750,000. First preference is given to European students.
One or several scholarships (at the sole discretion of the CESC), with a payout of $20,000 per scholarship awarded. The scholarships are direct contributions to the tuition fee payable for the 3 semester MMH program. The scholarship is administered by the region.

Established June 3, 2009 by the CHS European Region.
An endowed fund that offers scholarships to PDP participants currently working in Europe. Applicants need to complete an application including two essays. There is a two-session minimum attendance required in order to receive scholarship monies. Scholarships are awarded in mid-May. The market value of the endowment is over $165,000.
Established October 28, 1994 by the CHS European Region.
One scholarship paying approximately $8,000 per year from an endowment with a market value of over $259,000.
Regional scholarship fund for the General Managers Program (GMP) course work on the Cornell campus in June or January. One $10,000 contribution will cover course fees and a small stipend toward hotel, meals and transportation. This scholarship is administered by the region.
